Mangalore, March 7: The 'Vishwa Kannada Theru' which is scheduled to participate in the Vishwa Kannada Sammelana at Belgaum was formally flagged off by Zilla Panchayat President KT Shailaja Bhat, at Kadri Park in the city in the presence of dignitaries on Monday morning.
The 'Theru' (chariot) carries the logo of the Sammelan in the front and various paintings depicting the culture and history of the district on the sides.
Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat CEO P Shivashankar said that the chariot is being taken out to create awareness about the art, culture and literature of the land among the masses.
It will traverse through places of historical and cultural importance in Bantwal, Puttur, Sullia, Belthangady taluks and reach Belgaum via Moodbidri on March 10, he informed.
Tahshildars of the respective taluks, along with local dignitaries will receive the chariot at their respective taluk borders. K V Raman, Stage Director, Nithyanada Rao, Secretary, Manikrishna Swami and Lakshmeesh are the district representatives accompanying the chariot.
A delegation of 50-members from Dakshina Kannada district will be attending the Belgaum conference, which will commence on March 11 and end on March 13.
Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav, Coastal Development Authority Chairman Nagaraj Shetty, Assistant Commissioner Prabhulinga Kavalkatti, DK District Kannada Sahithya Parishath President Pradeep Kumar Kalkura and former State Kannada Sahithya Parishath President Harikrishna Punaroor were among those present during the flagging off ceremony.
