Kumar Rajagopalan, CEO, Retailers Association of India (RAI), said that the excise duty, which will have to be borne by consumers, will make branded garments very expensive. It will increase prices of readymade branded garments by 8 per cent to 15 per cent. The hike will affect more than 50,000 brands across India, he said.
Mr. Rajagopalan said that the excise duty increase is badly timed as the sale of garments was just picking up. Cotton prices have also increased and manufacturers could ill-afford the excise duty hike, he said. The issue of a rollback in the hike is being pursued with the Ministry of Textiles and the Ministry of Finance. A response is expected in a day or two, he said.
