Mangalore, March 6: Groups like Sri Rama Sene have become an obstacle in the way of freedom of women, said eminent writer Vaidehi.
She was expressing her views on women and their problems in the modern age, at 'Sthree Utsav' organised as part of International Women's Day celebrations at St Ann's College of Education here on Tuesday.
“The society has completely failed to ensure freedom for women and respect for her feelings”, she said.
She lamented that male dominated society has continued to tame women and treat her as a slave even after she attaining modern education.
Vaidehi said what women needed was equal social and political opportunities than dole. “Why do you differentiate between men and women? We have equal rights and give us our due,'' she said arguing on that there was need for reservation for women and they should be considered as equals.
She lamented that even after a hundred years the day was being celebrated which reflected the sad state of affairs of the present day.
On the occasion, students of the college released a compact disc containing introduction to 30 significant women personalities prepared by them.
IFS officer Anita Arekal also spoke. Principal of the college M Clare presided over the programme.
