Mangalore, March 9: The Dakshina Kannada district unit of All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA), the women's wing of Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Wednesday joined the nationwide agitation by staging a protest in front of the office of Deputy Commissioner here to exert pressure on the union government to fulfill their various demands.
The agitation, which aims at demanding the implementation of 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and protesting the arbitrary hike in the prices of essential commodities, comes a day after international women's day.
Speaking on the occasion, Sukanya, district president of AIDWA said that both union and state government have sidelined the need of safeguarding the rights and fulfilling the needs of women and the poor of the country.
Holding ruling parties responsible for the challenges, problems faced by the women and rising incidents of violence against women, Mrs Sukanya said that her organisation has been compelled to take to the streets to protest the unpardonable negligence of rulers.
Addressing the gathering Muneer Katipalla, district president of DYFI, said that consecutive governments in the Centre and state have completely failed to ensure the rights of women and poor people of the country.
Yadav Shetty, Vasanth Achary and Corporator Jayanthi Shetty were among the protesters.
