Mangalore, March 11: Mangalore Air Crash Victims' Families' Association (MACVFA) has decided to convene a meeting on March 13 here to take an appropriate decision on the next step in struggle.
Although on the day of air crash (May 22, 2010) the then Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel had assured that the heirs would be paid up to $ 1, 60, 000 (around Rs 76 lakh) as per the provisions of the Montreal Convention.
However, later Air India openly refused to pay the above amount citing various reasons and reduced the compensation to around Rs 10 lakh.
According to MACVFA, Air India has deliberately deceived the family members of the victims besides violating international law.
MACVFA president Y Mohammed Beary in a press release has stated that his association has sought the exact details of the compensation paid to each family under the Right to Information Act.
He said that as per the rules of Montreal Convention, the compensation would increase in case of pilot error and in this tragedy investigation reports have proved that there was a pilot error.
Beary said that a team led by Sweden based advocate Stephen will visit Mangalore on March 12. The representatives of victims' family members are expected to meet the delegation on March 13, after the meeting.
The meeting is scheduled to be held at 10 am at Sahodaya Hall, Balmatha here. For more details contact 9880314522
