Verve'11 Fest begins at AIMIT

March 18, 2011
Mangalore, March 18: The inaugural of VERVE-2011, the Management Fest organized by AIMIT Business School of St Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangalore, took place on Thursday, March 17, at AIMIT Campus. The college choir sang the prayer song. It was followed a presentation on various events organised by the college during the last one year and was followed by the presentation on Insignia 2011.

Ivan Fernandes, Chairman, KE Global, Dubai was the Chief Guest for the inaugural. Dr Beena Dias, faculty Co-ordinator, Verve 2011 welcomed the gathering. Rev Dr Oswald Mascarenhas SJ, Chairman, MBA Dept, AIMIT, addressed the gathering and spoke about his 8 months experience at Aloysius Institute. He spoke about his vision and the introduction of 30 percent new events concept every year followed by giving examples of Procter and Gamble (P & G) and he said this could be achieved by Signs, Symbols, Metaphors and Meanings. Rev Fr Joseph Rodrigues SJ, Rector, St Aloysian Institutions presided over the function and gave the presidential address wherein he spoke about the universal symbols for the event. Fr Denzil Lobo SJ, Director, AIMIT, introduced the campus and spoke about the Jesuit ethos. He stressed the need of creativity and critical thinking in imparting education and that is what the Institution tries to implement to make students coming out of the Management & IT School more conscientious, compassionate and committed.

The chief Guest, Ivan Fernandes, delivered the key note address. “Dare to dream, take the step and seize the opportunities which come your way”, was his message to all the participants gathered. He said that it is about participating in the event but not about winning which was the most motivating line to the participants. He said like the sportspersons who keep on practising day and night students need to work hard to give a brilliant performance. He also said that the future of each and every person is in their hands and they have lived every page of their life and the next page is said to be blank and the blank page is what we are going to do in future. He ended by saying 'unlock your potential and prove yourself' during the event. The vote of thanks was given by Govil Saldanha, Student Co-ordinator, Verve 2011.

The inaugural was followed by the ice-breaking session where each of the participating teams gave a brief introduction to the team through enacting some of the contemporary issues in life. Twenty teams from all over the country are participating in the two day event.

Mangaluru: The Ullal police have arrested Manohar, the owner of Vazco Beach Resort, and its manager Bharath in connection with the drowning of three college girls from Mysuru at the resort’s swimming pool on November 17.

City Commissioner of Police Anupam Agrawal confirmed the arrests, stating that a case has been registered under Section 106 of BNS. The bodies of the victims, all in their twenties, have been handed over to their parents. The women had arrived at the resort for a weekend getaway on November 16.

Following the tragic incident, the resort was sealed by officials led by Mangaluru Assistant Commissioner Harshavardhan. The trade license of the resort, issued on June 13, 2024, has been suspended, and the tourism department has temporarily revoked the resort's registration. These actions prohibit the resort from engaging in any tourism-related activities until further notice.

Someshwara TMC Chief Officer stated that the suspension was due to the resort's failure to implement adequate safety measures, which resulted in the loss of three lives. Further investigations are underway.

Udupi, Nov 11: A traveller reportedly lost ₹4.1 lakh after attempting to book a cab online in Udupi.

At around 1:30 PM on November 7, the man from West Bengal searched for car rentals on Google and selected a website named "Shakti Car Rentals." Shortly after, he was contacted by someone claiming to be "Rohit Sharma," who directed him to pay a registration fee of ₹150 on the site.

After unsuccessful payment attempts via both his Canara Bank debit card and SBI credit card (without receiving an OTP), "Rohit Sharma" instructed him to pay the driver directly. But at 1:47 PM, he received messages showing deductions of ₹3.3 lakh from his SBI credit card and ₹80,056 from his Canara Bank debit card, totaling ₹4.1 lakh.

The complainant alleges fraud through a deceptive link disguised as a booking token fee. A case has been registered at Udupi Town Police Station.

Udupi, Nov 11: The Karkala town police in Udupi have arrested Krishna Naik, the sculptor responsible for installing a 33-foot Parashurama statue at Umikkal Hill in Bailur, Karkala taluk.

Naik, the owner of Krish Art World and a resident of Bengaluru's Visvesvaraya Layout, was apprehended in Mahe, part of the Union Territory of Puducherry, for allegedly substituting a look-alike statue in place of a genuine bronze figure at the Parashurama Theme Park in Karkala.

Udupi Superintendent of Police Dr. Arun K confirmed the arrest, stating that Naik faces charges under Sections 420 (cheating) and 409 (criminal breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code.

This legal action followed a complaint lodged in June by Krishna Shetty, a resident of Nallur village, Karkala. Shetty claimed that Naik had received a payment of ₹1,25,50,000 from Udupi Nirmithi Kendra for the installation of a bronze Parashurama statue. However, Naik allegedly deceived the government by installing a replica instead.

The statue was unveiled on January 27, 2023, by then Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai. Current Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has since ordered a CID investigation to probe deeper into the alleged fraud surrounding the statue's installation at the theme park.
