Udupi, March 18: Immediately after Japan experienced a severe earthquake, Harikrishna Bhat, President, Head of Operations and Representative Director at HCL, Japan, had walked a distance of 30 kilo meters to reach his residence there.
Hailing from Alevoor in Udupi district Harikrishna Bhat had been settled in Japan 30 years back. He is married to a Japanese and blessed with two girls.
Harikrishna is presently in Alevoor to participate in last rituals of one of his family members.
He told coastaldigest.com over phone that at the time of the earthquake he was holding a meeting with the representatives of a multinational company, in the HCL Office, on the 44th floor. As the entire building turned shaky they put off the meeting. Even the power went off. He got down the building through staircase and rushed to his residence walking for five and half hours.
Meantime, his mobiles were buzzed with messages and calls from India enquiring his whereabouts. He reached home replying to them, “We are safe here. Nothing to worry''
He said, “Such a major earthquake and consequences had not happened before in Japan”.
From India Harikrishna is in constant touch with his wife and daughters in Japan through Internet. “They keep me informed of the latest developments. Just now my wife e-mailed me that a huge contingent of voluntary force has been deployed for rehabilitation of the evacuees. Measures have been taken to check the impact of radiation caused by the breakdown of nuclear reactors.
Harikrishna will soon leave for Japan honouring the call from the HCL. He was earlier serving as the Vice President of Wipro in Japan.
