Areca growers burn loan recovery notices, demand waiver

Uppinangady, March 19: Karnataka State Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene on Saturday demanded the waiver of loans secured by areca formers since they have been adversely affected by decline in prices, fall in crop volume due to yellow disease over the last 10 years.

A resolution to this effect was passed at the meeting held at Uppinangady, which urged the government to respond to the plight of areca growers in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and north Madikeri.

Speaking on the occasion Kodihalli Chandrashekar, the state unit president of the Raitha Sangha, regretted that there was no mechanism to evolve a scientific price for the produce and blasted the erroneous credit policy of the government.

He also set fire to the loan recovery notices issued to the farmers by banks and co-operative societies. He said, the government is the real defaulter and the banks and co-operative societies must take up the issue only with the government and not the hapless farmers.

He also urged the farmers not to take the extreme step of ending life due to loan distress and requested them to unitedly fight for their rights.

Kanagal Murthy from Hassan, Kisan Sene Kasargod unit president Gundyadka Venkataramana Bhat, Prakash Ammannaya, DK district president Rohithaksha Rai spoke on the occasion.

DK district RAitha Sangha working president Kiran Punacha delivered welcome speech. Sridhar Shetty proposed a vote of thanks.

Immediately after the programme, Puttur taluk Tahsildar Dase Gowda arrived at the venue. A copy of the resolution passed at the meeting was handed over to him.

Udupi: Six junior artists from the prequel of Kannada blockbuster film ‘Kantara’ were injured, when the bus they were travelling in overturned in the district, police said on Monday.

According to police, the accident occurred near Jadkal on Sunday night when the mini-bus carrying the crew of the film overturned.

“The incident happened while they were returning to Kollur after completing the shoot at Mudoor in Jadkal. The mini-bus was carrying 20 junior artistes when it met with the accident,” a police officer said.

The injured were rushed to hospitals in Jadkal and Kundapur for treatment, they said.

The Kollur police are investigating the matter.

"The news making rounds is completely false. The Kantara: Chapter 1 team began shooting at 06:00 AM today, and everything is proceeding as normal. A minor accident occurred 20 kilometres away from the shooting location, involving a local bus carrying some members of the Kantara team. However, no injuries were reported," a source close to the production said.
