PDOs stage stir against assault on officer

Mangalore, March 24: Flaying the assault on a Panchayat Development Officer (PDO) of Maladi Gram Panchayat in Belthnagady taluk, Panchayat Development Officers Federation staged a protest in Zilla Panchayat office premises on Wednesday.


It was said that Maladi Gram Panchayat PDO Jagadish S was assaulated by a Panchayat member Sudhakar Alva when the latter failed to settle the bills related to Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). Due to technical reason, the bill could not be settled. Enraged over the incident, the GP member had allegedly abused and assaulted the PDO.

Addressing the protesters, Gram Panchayat Employees and Secretaries Association President Prakash Shetty said criminal case must be filed against the GP member Sudhakar Alva for assaulting the PDO and the GP member should be disqualified from the membership.

“The government had created the post of PDO to introduce transparency in the Gram Panchayat administration. However, many a time, the PDOs can not discharge their duties efficiently within the framework of the law owing to the pressure from the elected representatives,” he added.

He said memorandum has already been submitted to the police urging to file criminal case against the GP member. “From the time we were appointed, we have been suppressed. Those who had come with the dreams of creating a model village by transparent administered have been shattered with the present system. If the GP member is not punished and if we fail to get justice, then all the PDOs will tender mass resignation,” Federation Secretary Harish said.


Zilla Panchayat CEO P Shivashankar has assured the Federation members that legal action will be initaited against the culprit and that he has laready held talks with the SP.

Mangaluru: District-in-Charge Minister and Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dinesh Gundu Rao, announced that a day-care chemotherapy centre will soon be established at District Wenlock Hospital. Speaking to mediapersons after reviewing the activities at Wenlock and Government Lady Goschen Hospital, he shared the government’s plans to enhance healthcare services in the region.

Key Initiatives Announced

•    Day-Care Chemotherapy Centre:

  • Ten beds will be reserved for cancer patients.
  • The government will collaborate with Yenepoya Hospital to provide chemotherapy treatments.
  • All required facilities for the centre are already in place, awaiting inauguration by the Chief Minister.

•    Wenlock Hospital Facelift:

  • Critical Care Block: To be built at a cost of ₹24 crore.
  • Integrated Public Health (IPH) Lab: Planned with a budget of ₹1 crore.
  • New OPD Block: As per a 2017 agreement, KMC Hospital will take up construction. Discussions with KMC management are underway.

•    Additional Requirements:

  • A new mortuary and post-mortem building.
  • Paramedical college building.
  • Modern kitchen.
  • Bridge connecting two buildings within the hospital.

•    Total facelift cost: ₹6 crore to ₹10 crore, utilizing funds from the Department of Health and Family Welfare and CSR contributions.

•    Timeline:
By December or January, priority works will be finalized. The superintendents of Wenlock and Lady Goschen Hospitals are scheduled to visit Bengaluru next week to discuss these projects.

•    MRI Fee Allegations:
The minister assured that allegations of patients being charged for MRI scans at Wenlock Hospital will be resolved at the earliest.
These measures aim to improve healthcare accessibility and infrastructure, positioning Wenlock Hospital as a state-of-the-art facility in the region.
