Udupi, March 31: Surprised to see this metallic nest? But it is true. An Udupi based Ornithologist has found two nests built by crows at Manipal.
When Dr NA Madhyastha, noted ornithologist, received information on the metallic nest, he did not believe it. But seeing is believing. When he reached the spot, he was surprised to see the nests made of binding wires on the base and soft fuse wires, electric wires and clutch wires inside the nest. That too, was hanging to a peeple tree.
According to Dr NA Madhyastha crow is wisest of all birds. “It can live in most critical situation. It is useful to human beings, can live with human beings and can also be a challenge to human beings,” he said adding, “If all the crows go on strike for 24 hours human beings life becomes miserable, as the crows live on eating food wastes.” Just imagine the stink generating from the waste.
According to Dr Madhyastha, the surprising phenomenon was a result of deforestation for modernization. As the crows did not find sufficient sticks or grass for building nest, they might have decided to build it with wires. “Building nests for reproduction was birds' natural instinct. It's instinct made it build a nest with wires,” he added.
One of the two wired nests weighed 4.5 KGs. Dr Madhyastha has been using it at his awareness sessions for college students on environment.
