April 2, 2011
Mangalore, April 2: Officials of Mangalore City Corporation led by Commissioner Dr K N Vijayaprakash on Saturday raided many shops in Central Market area and seized large quantity of plastic bags below 40 microns in thickness.
Environment officer Manjunath and Assistant Health Officer Krishnappa Gowda, Health Inspectors Basavaraj and Babu Mallan and Revenue Officer Meghan also accompanied him in the raid.
As per the rules set by district administration, those business establishments which use banned plastic bags will have to pay a spot fine of Rs 250 for the first time. If they continue to use even after paying the fine, then the trade license will be cancelled, he warned.
“We had already declared the polythene bags below 40 microns as illegal packing material and those shopkeepers and consumers have been warned of using them for packing purpose could attract fines. However, it seems that nobody will consider this order seriously unless they were subjected to hefty penalties and disciplinary actions,” the Commissioner told media persons during the raid.
