Mangalore, June 16: Deputy Inspector General of Prisons VS Raju on Thursday, June 16, visited district prison in the city for inspection.
The visit comes a day after Rashid Malbari, an associate of underworld don Chotta Shakeel, claimed that weapons were stored in the jail.
However, after the inspection DIG told media persons that no weapons were found despite officials carried out a thorough search. However, he admitted that the drug usage among the jailbirds is rampant.
According to him, lack of staff to supervise the inmates is the reason for most of the irregularities in the prison. He also said that the measures would be taken for the recruitment of adequate staff including security guards and police personnel.
The irregularities would be rectified once the jail shifted to new premises as promised by the Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa, he said.
On Wednesday, Rasheed Malbari claimed that there was a plot to eliminate him at the district jail. Malbari claimed that under-trial Sharan had assaulted him in the presence of superintendent. Sharan is in judicial custody in connection to the murder case of AS Ramakrishna, administrative officer of KVG Medical College, Sullia.
