PM will visit endosulfan afftected areas: Chandy

Kasargod, June 21: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said here on Monday that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would visit the endosulfan affected areas of the district.

Addressing a meeting of officials and representatives of the people at the Collectorate conference hall here, the Chief Minister said when he visited Delhi last time he had apprised the Prime Minister of the problems caused by the spraying of endosulafan in the district.

Chandy said that the Prime Minister had assured him that he would visit the affected areas when he would visit the state next time.

The Chief Minister said that the families of the 176 victims had been given Rs 50,000 last time and they would be given Rs 50,000 on Monday. The remaining families in the list of 486 victims would be given Rs 1 lakh each. He said the money would be deposited in their account on line and they would receive the money on Monday itself.

He said the government was committed to give maximum help to the victims. When endosulfan was banned in the district in 2001, it was continued to be used in other districts.

District Collector K N Satish, ministers K P Mohanan, A P Anilkumar, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, Dr. M K Muneer, Adoor Prakash and P Karunakaran MP, MLAs N A Nellikkunnu, P B Abdul Razak, K Kunhiraman, E Chandrasekharn and municipal chairman T E Abdullah and district panchayat president P P Shyamala Devi attended the meeting.
