Mangalore, June 22: Port has initiated environmental measures which include plantation of 10000 saplings in 2010-11 along with other measures to minimize pollution and has been certified as “Environmental Management System” ISO 14001: 2004 certificate.
As a part of making “A Clean and Green Port”, Port planned “Vanamahotsava – 2011” for planting another 10000 saplings for 2011-12 and commenced plantation on Wednesday, June 22.
P Tamilvanan, Chairman, New Mangalore Port Trustm TSN Murthy, Dy Chairman, C D Kumar, Environmental Officer KSPCB, Palaiah, Deputy Conservator of forest, students and teachers of Meenakaliya High School, Villagers of Meenakaliya village and Gangadhar Pangal, President, Mogavera Mahasabha, Meenakaliya, Port Employees participated in plantations.
Mr Tamilvanan informed the students that they should plant saplings and should take care of them in front of their school and houses and also educate their friends and neighbours to take care of surrounding premises.
Mr Murthy requested individual should spare few seconds for caring of plants which will be a great contribution to environment.
Mr Kumar appreciated the efforts made by the Port for developing green belts and requested all the gathering to support the cause.
Mr Ganapathy Aithal, of Meenakaliya Village appreciated the efforts made by Port and requested the villagers to take care of the plants.
S V Madabhavi, Deputy Chief Engineer welcomed the dignitaries and gathering. The programme ended by planting 400 saplings.
