Speaking on the occasion member of the Joint Committee of Trade Unions (JCTU), Karnataka, Vishwanath Rai said that announcing the hike in the prices of petrol is the opportunistic move of the UPA government, as it was announced just after the elections to Kerala, West Bengal, Assam, Tamilnadu and Pondichery were over.
He also opined that the taxes levied on the petrol, both by central and state governments, would come around 51 per cent of its total price. If that was withdrawn oil companies could be saved from going loss, he said.
Government's contention that the price hike was inevitable to save the companies from going loss is meaningless and it reminds one of the saying 'Robbing Peter to Pay Paul', he said.
District Convener of JCTU Adamaru Sripathi Acharya, K Shankar of Udupi Dsitrict CITU, KV Bhat of AITUC, U Gurudath of AIIEA, U Shivaraya of Udupi District Bank Employees Union, Shashidhar Golla of BSNL Employees Association also participated in the protest jatha.
