Mangalore, June 29: Students who join postgraduate courses of Mangalore University from the academic year 2011-12 will have an added advantage pertaining to evaluating answer scripts. They can ask the university to get their answer scripts evaluated again under “challenge valuation”.

In reality, if a student opts for “challenge valuation” his or her answer script undergoes evaluation either for the third time or fourth time as the case may be.

This marks a major shift on its academic front for the university which recently went for the choice-based credit semester system (CBCS) for most of its postgraduate courses from this academic year. The CBCS regulations offer “challenge valuation” facility for students.

Guidelines

According to Vice-Chancellor T.C. Shivashankara Murthy, the university was yet to frame guidelines for “challenge valuation” which were expected to be ready after a month. Prof. Murthy told The Hindu that the guidelines would have to be in place when evaluating the answer scripts of first semester examinations after December.

The Vice-Chancellor said two evaluators evaluated an answer script of a postgraduate student. Of them, one was an internal evaluator and the other an external one in what was called the double evaluation. Results would be declared taking the average of total marks. In case there was a difference of 20 per cent and above in marks given by evaluators, then the university referred the script to a third evaluator and declared the result later by taking the average of nearest two marks.

For example, if the internal evaluator and the external evaluator gave 40 marks and 70 marks, respectively, it would have to be referred to the third evaluator as there was a difference of 30 marks. If the third evaluator gave 60 marks, then 70 marks given by the external evaluator (the one closest to this number) would be added to it and the total (130 marks) would be divided by two.

Prof. Murthy said if the student was not satisfied with the marks, he or she under the “challenge valuation” could apply for evaluating the script again.

The candidate would have to pay a prescribed fee “within 20 days after the publication of results or 10 days from the date of despatch of the marks cards by the Registrar (Evaluation) to the department/colleges whichever is later.”

Udupi, Nov 11: The Karkala town police in Udupi have arrested Krishna Naik, the sculptor responsible for installing a 33-foot Parashurama statue at Umikkal Hill in Bailur, Karkala taluk.

Naik, the owner of Krish Art World and a resident of Bengaluru's Visvesvaraya Layout, was apprehended in Mahe, part of the Union Territory of Puducherry, for allegedly substituting a look-alike statue in place of a genuine bronze figure at the Parashurama Theme Park in Karkala.

Udupi Superintendent of Police Dr. Arun K confirmed the arrest, stating that Naik faces charges under Sections 420 (cheating) and 409 (criminal breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code.

This legal action followed a complaint lodged in June by Krishna Shetty, a resident of Nallur village, Karkala. Shetty claimed that Naik had received a payment of ₹1,25,50,000 from Udupi Nirmithi Kendra for the installation of a bronze Parashurama statue. However, Naik allegedly deceived the government by installing a replica instead.

The statue was unveiled on January 27, 2023, by then Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai. Current Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has since ordered a CID investigation to probe deeper into the alleged fraud surrounding the statue's installation at the theme park.

Udupi, Nov 11: A traveller reportedly lost ₹4.1 lakh after attempting to book a cab online in Udupi.

At around 1:30 PM on November 7, the man from West Bengal searched for car rentals on Google and selected a website named "Shakti Car Rentals." Shortly after, he was contacted by someone claiming to be "Rohit Sharma," who directed him to pay a registration fee of ₹150 on the site.

After unsuccessful payment attempts via both his Canara Bank debit card and SBI credit card (without receiving an OTP), "Rohit Sharma" instructed him to pay the driver directly. But at 1:47 PM, he received messages showing deductions of ₹3.3 lakh from his SBI credit card and ₹80,056 from his Canara Bank debit card, totaling ₹4.1 lakh.

The complainant alleges fraud through a deceptive link disguised as a booking token fee. A case has been registered at Udupi Town Police Station.

Mangaluru: A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday, November 17, at Vazco Resort (VAZCO), situated at Battappadi Cross Road in Someshwara on the outskirts of the city, when three young women drowned in the resort’s swimming pool.

Disturbingly, an iPhone recording and CCTV footage captured their final moments, providing insights into the heartbreaking accident.

According to City Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal, the tragedy occurred at approximately 10:05 AM. The victims were identified as:

Keerthana N (21) from Devaraj Mohalla, Hebbal Second Stage, Vijayanagar Post.
Nishitha M.D (21) from 4th Cross, Kuribarahalli, Mysuru.
Parvathi S (20) from Ramanuja Road, K.R. Mohalla, Mysuru.

Sequence of Events

The three women had checked into Room No. 2 of the resort on the morning of November 16 and stayed overnight. On Sunday morning, around 10 AM, they entered the swimming pool to play. Reports suggest that they placed their clothes poolside and set an iPhone to record the activity.

Initial findings indicate one woman slipped underwater and began to struggle. When the second attempted a rescue, she too drowned, followed by the third woman. Within minutes, the tragedy claimed all three lives. CCTV footage from the resort corroborates the sequence, showing the young women struggling before succumbing to the water.

Investigation Underway

The resort staff discovered the lifeless bodies and immediately raised the alarm. Ullal Police Inspector H N Balakrishna and his team are conducting an investigation. Preliminary reports suggest the women were non-swimmers, and the lack of safety measures contributed to the tragedy.

The resort is owned by Manohar, as per police records. While the formal case is yet to be registered, the incident has raised serious questions about safety protocols at resorts offering pool facilities.
