Mangalore, July 1: A group of activists protesting for the rights of street-venders near City Bus terminus here on Friday were briefly arrested by the city police, to felicitate the civic tiger squad to continue its eviction drive.
Leftist activists Sunil Kumar Bajal, Vasanth Achary, Imthiyaz and seven others, who tried to stop the civic tiger at around 11:30 a.m. were dragged by the police to the jeep and taken to Pandeshwar police station. However all the arrested were later released after being produced before Tahsildar.
The arrested were protesting under the banner of Beedibadi Vyaparigala Horata Samithi, to oppose the Mangalore City Corporation's decision to continue the eviction drive against the street vendors.
In Thursday's general body meeting, MCC Mayor Praveen Anchan affirmed that the civic body would not stop the street vendors' eviction drive with the help of 'Civic Tiger' at any cost.
After being released Mr. Bajal said that the Samiti would continue its struggle against civic tiger.
