Mangalore, June 2: Dozens of women under the banner of Dakshina Kannada District Women Congress Committee staged protest against the policies of BJP ruled state government on Saturday.
Addressing the protesters gathered in front of the office of Deputy Commissioner here, former Zilla Panchayat President Mamatha Gatti accused the Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa of conspiring against farmers and poor people of the state.
Coming down heavily on Energy Minister Shobha Karandlaje for proposing to hike in electricity tariff, Gatti said the hike in electricity is not necessiated. The hike will be an additional burden on the people of the state. If the government decides to hike the price, then Congress will stage state-wide protest against the hike, she warned.
She said by not reducing the VAT and cess on petroleum products in Karnataka, CM has shown that the BJP led government is not pro-poor.
When Prime Minister gave a call to reduce the cess and VAT on petroleum products in states, several states which is ruled by the Congress have reduced the VAT, thus lessening the burden on the poor people. However, Yeddyurappa government has refused to reduce the VAT and cess, she said.
In fact, 14 per cent VAT on petroleum products in Karnataka is highest in the country. Moreover, the government had hiked the KSRTC bus fare, which was not necessary, she pointed out.
Women Congress leaders Shalit Pinto, Hilda Alva, Anitha Hemanth and Emilda Pinto were present among others.
