Mangalore, July 5: 'Faithful' citizens of Mangalore on Tuesday morning smelt the fumes of black magic, when they noticed broken pumpkin and coconut, pieces of sliced lemon, turmeric powder and vermillion etc. lying in front of the building of Mangalore City Corporation.
Interestingly, the objects were found at the spot where the Mayor Praveen Anchan parks his car.
However, unlike Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa, who had trembled when alleged sorcerers targeted Vidhana Soudha a few months ago, the city Mayor burst out laughing, after hearing the news from his aid.
“Neither I believe in such foul things, nor I suspect anyone,” said Mr Anchan when contacted. "I couldn't control my laugh when one of my aid informed me about the 'black magic' at around 6:30 a.m.," he added.
The watchmen posted at MCC were clueless how the objects made their way into the open place. The security men cleaned the area with water by 7:30 a.m.
However, despite his bold and rationalistic reaction, it is learnt that Mayor is not willing to go to his office.
The incident has sparked heated debated among corporators and officials of MCC.
When some Corporators recalled similar incidents occurred in Vidhana Saudha and Raj Bhavan, others opined that it might be the act of miscreants who wanted to distract people's attention from main things.
Anti-Dalit Witchcraft?
Reacting to the incident P Keshava, Member of State Committee of Dalit Sangharsha Samithi (Bheemavada) opined that the acts of witchcraft were committed by the people who couldn't tolerate Mayor's pro-Dalit programmes.
He said that it was condemnable that the ill-tradition of black magic has reached to the lower level administration from Vidhan Soundha. “We will meet the Mayor regarding the issue and will take future course of action” he said.
