Mangalore, July 6: A team of final year Mechanical Engineering students of Srinivas Institute of Technology, Valachil have conceptualized and designed a project called “Movement Locking System” (MLS) under the guidance of Muhammad Gowspeer,
Principal of the college Dr Srinivas Mayya D informed in a press release that, since stopping and moving the vehicle upward on inclined roads in difficult and tedious task, usually declutching technique or hand brake is used for this purpose. But these techniques require quick application and depend on the driver's skill and capability. If they are not quick enough, the vehicle will roll back resulting in accidents.
Mechanical engineering students Prashanth, Prashanth Kumar H V, Sachin V and Shuki who have developed this MLS say that MLS stops vehicles from moving backwards. The system consists of a bendix drive and disk brake arrangement coupled to the propeller shaft. The bendix restricts the rotation of the propeller shaft to a forward direction, making driving on an incline safe. A reverse movement is possible only when the system is deactivated.
The MLS eliminates declutching, thus reducing clutch wear. This is especially useful for women who are conscious about their driving skills.
