Addressing the protesters Krishnanada D, District Convener of the Samithi urged the 'Vigilance and Monitoring Committee on SC/ST atrocities' to rewrite the erased name of Ambedkar Bhavan in the presence of Deputy Commissioner.
He said Ambedkar Bhavan was allegedly “claimed and taken over” by a local youth club. The building which had been built with government money but on completion, the youth club had put up a board with its own name and prevented Dalits from using it, he said.
He said the Superintendent of Police of Civil Rights Enforcement Cell misleading the entire issue supporting the youth club to continue their functions in the Bhavan.
He urged the authorities concerned to hand over the key of Bhavan to Gram Panchayat.
He also urged the police department to take stringent action against those, who erased the name of Ambedkar from the Bhavan, under the SC/ST atrocity prevention act.
M Devadas, Shekhar Chilimbi, M Koosappa, Shekhar Hejamady and others were present.
Following the protest, a memorandum addressed to Governor and Chief Minister of Karnataka to were handed over to Deputy Commissioner.
