Mangalore, July 21: Students under the banner of different organisations have continued to stage protest in the city demanding the immediate withdrawal of Bhagavad Gita Abhiyan in schools across the state.

Over a hundred students on Thursday evening gathered in front of the office of Deputy Commissioner, here under the aegis of Dakshina Kannada district unit of Campus Front of India, to protest the “state government's conspiracy to saffronise entire education system”

Speaking on the occasion, Haidar Hameed, district president of CFI said that the State government's move to introduce compulsory teaching of a Hindu religious text to the students of primary and high schools, not only disturbs the communal harmony but also insults the democratic set up of the country.

He accused the BJP led government of conspiring to replace the constitution with 'Manusmriti' through schools and poisoning the minds of new generation.

Responding to Primary and Higher Education Minister Vishveshwara Hegade Kageri's statement that those who oppose the Bhagvad Gita Campaign should get lost from India, Mr Hameed said such an irresponsible and irrational statements lead to the disharmony in the society.

“As constitution itself guarantees the right to assess the authorities, statement of Education Minister raises suspicions over his understanding of Constitution,” he said.

SFI Protest

The Dakshina Kannada district unit of Student Federation of India too staged a similar protest on Wednesday in the same place opposing the controvesial Bhagavad Gita Abhiyan.

Speaking on the occasion, Muneer Katipalla, District President of DYFI said: “The objective of launching Bhagavad Gita campaign in the schools as claimed by Mr Kageri, is to instill sense of values among children, but in reality the children do not need any lessons on morality as there is no dearth of values in them.

“It is corrupt politicians in our state, who require the lessons on values,” he said.

Terming the Gita Abhiyan as unconstitutional, he said it is imparting wrong message to the public.
