Kasaragod, July 25: Kasaragod MP P Karunakaran, has hailed the Kerala High Court verdict ordering Air India Ltd. to pay a minimum of Rs.75 lakh as compensation to the kin of every victim who died in the Air India Express plane crash in Mangalore on May 22, 2010.
“Although belated, the High Court order is a major relief to the kin of the victims who died in the crash,” Mr. Karunakaran said in a statement here.
He said the Union government and its Civil Aviation Ministry had not taken a decision on the vital issue more than a year after the tragedy.
Mr. Karunakaran said that he as representative of Kasaragod, which lost 48 people in the crash, had forwarded several representations to the then Civil Aviation Minister, Praful Patel, and the incumbent, Vayalar Ravi.
However, the government delayed the process to help the insurance company.
The MP urged the government take steps to implement the court order also for those who had already been paid less than Rs.75 lakh.
