Mangalore, July 26: Dakshina Kannada district administration and DK Zilla Panchayat in association with the District Health and Family Welfare Department observed World Population Day by organising a programme - Small Family Overall Development - at Regional Advanced Paediatric Care Centre (RAPCC) at the District Wenlock Hospital here on Tuesday.
Shedding light on rapid growth India's population, Dr O R Srirangappa, District Health and Family Welfare Officer the population of the country has increased from 36 crore in 1951 to 121 crore in 2011.
If the population continues to increase with the same speed, the global population will reach 800 crore in 2025 in India alone and 8 crore in Karanataka, he predicted.
Dr N S Channappa Gowda, Deputy Commissioner said July 11 was observed annually as the World Population Day since 1989 to spread awareness on global population growth. The day was declared as the World Population Day after the world population reached five billion on July 11 in 1987.
He expressed fear that the population explosion in the country may derail all development activities and progress if it is not tackled immediately. Slower growth of population will certainly benefit all aspect of development in education, health, agriculture, urbanization, and environment, he pointed out.
Mr Gowda said, Mangalore is second populous city in Karnataka after Bangalore. He also said that there was need to create awareness regarding female sex ratio in the rural areas in the district.
Dr Rukmini, DK District Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) Officer spoke at the seminar “Let us all join hands for population stabilization” on occasion.
President of DK Zilla Panchayat K T Shailaja Bhat presided over the function. Mangalore MLA U T Khader, District Medical Officer Dr Sangameshwar and others were present in the function.
