Mangalore, July 27: Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists Union (DKWJU) in association with Mangalore Press Club celebrated Vanamahotsava at Kadri Park here on Wednesday morning.
After inaugurating the event, Dr K N Vijayaprakash, Commissioner, Mangalore City Corporation said that Vanamahotsava is a meaningful celebration, as it makes the city green.
Regretting that MCC had to cut a large number of trees during road widening works, he said that planting more and more saplings is the only solution for this.
Promising to keep the city clean and green, the Commissioner said the civic body is planting more than 20,000 saplings across the city this year.
Dr Vijayaprakash appreciated the environmental concerns of journalists and invited self-help groups and schools to contribute for the preservation and promotion of greenery in the city.
Clifford Lobo, Range Forest Officer, Mangalore, informed that his department has been planting over 22,000 saplings this year in and around the city.
He said that 200 to 300 trees would be planted in Kadri Park itself. He also said that a large number of trees are being planted across beaches near the city to check sea erosion.
Madhu, Environmental Engineer, MCC, Harish Rai, President, DKWJA and many journalists from print and electronic media were present on the occasion.
