Mangalore, July 31: A successful Aortic root enlargement (NICK's Procedure) with aortic valve replacement was done probably for the first time in Mangalore region by a team of surgeons headed by Dr. Jayashankar Marla, Chief Cardiothoracic Surgeon, A J Hospital and Research Centre said a press release issued by AJHRC.
S V Naik, a 64 year patient from Honavar suffered from a synocopal attack after a meal. He was referred to Dr. Puroshotham, Cardiologist, AJHRC, who diagnosed him to have severe aortic valvular stenosis with aortic root narrowing.
The aortic valve was imposing strain on the heart and a valve replacement was necessary. Surgical team successfully placed a large 21 millimeter bio prosthesis aortic valve.
Surgical team consisted of Dr. Madhav Kamath, Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Dr. Gururaj Thantri, Chief Cardiac Anesthesiologist, Dr. Naganand, Anesthologist and staff.
Patient is now safely recovering from the surgery.
This corrective surgical procedure will help patients with small aortic root, the press release said.
