Abu Dhabi, August 1: A young Indian man was allegedly knifed to death in a group fight at a workers' accommodation in Baniyas in Abu Dhabi, sources said.
According to local media reports, Subin Varghese, 22, died after receiving serious injuries in the fight at the accommodation on Thursday night, a co-worker of the victim who is staying at the same accommodation.
He was a calm and quiet guy who was always playing games on his computer after the working hours but somehow he got involved in the fight between two groups of workers, said the co-worker who did not want to be named because of the ongoing police investigations.
Varghese, the victim, who hailed from Kerala, was working as an electrician with a contracting company in Abu Dhabi.
Although the tragic incident started with a drunken brawl, the victim was not drunk, the co-worker claimed. "It seems the fight started with an altercation about an incident at the work site. Varghese [the victim] questioned a fellow countryman who trespassed into the room of his friends and attacked them," he said.
There was a fight between Varghese and the fellow countryman and Varghese was left with serious wounds, he said.
Picked up by police
"All those involved in the brawl were picked up by the police. The fellow countryman who fought with the victim was later brought to the accommodation by the police, apparently for gathering the evidence," the friend of the victim said.
When contacted for confirmation about the incident and a comment about the investigation, a spokesman of Abu Dhabi Police said the media department of the police was not authorised to comment about the case because of the sensitivity involved.
An official who had access to the autopsy report of the victim informed that he died of stab wounds to the chest.
