Mangalore, August 9: The Mangalore leg of the annual Rickshaw Challenge-Mumbai Xpress-2011 was flagged off from Netaji Subash Chandra Bose Government School, Mallikatte here on Tuesday.
The 2,000 km-challenge will run for 14 days, taking its teams of international rickshaw racers on a journey across the length and breadth of the country. It began on July 30 in Mumbai.
The journey from Mumbai to Chennai this year has 31 adventure enthusiasts from all over the world driving 14 custom-made auto-rickshaws.
The aspiring adventures from countries as far as UK, Chile, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Canada etc. are participating in the event.
“It's been exciting yet equally adventurous and enlightening! It was a total culture shock but it's also been awesome fun,” one of the participants, from the UK said.
In order to win the Rickshaw challenge-Mumbai Express 20011, the participants will have to rely on the locals at each destination to guide them along.
The event is being organised by Mangalore Round Table 115 in partnership with Chennai Event Management Services.
To reach from Mumbai to Chennai, they pass through important cities like Alibag, Pune, Mahabaleshwar, Ratnagiri, panaji, Murudeshwar, Mangalore, Mysore, Bangalore and Vellore.
