Mangalore, August 10: As part of nationwide protest against price hike and demanding the government to provide ration cards to all families and 35 kilograms of rice at the rate of Rs 2 a kilo, members of Janavaadi Mahila Sangatane on Wednesday staged at demonstration in front of Deputy Commissioner's Office here.
The protesters lashed out at the State and Central Governments for their uncontrolled corruption growing list of scams.
“It was the responsibility of the government to provide food security for the people of the nation. Punishing people with steady raise in prices will not be appreciated. It is a shame that politicians of various parties are using these issues for their political benefit rather than helping the needy by solving them” the agitators said.
They termed government's decision to raise the prices of oil and LPG, as “inhuman” as 77% of the population lives on a daily income of Rs 20.
Accusing the governments of ignoring the economically backward population, JMS said “Due to an unscientific method of survey employed by the rulers, majority of people below poverty line do not even have a ration card.”
“The major reason for poverty in the country is the incompetent economic policy. It is not reasonable to raise fuel prices ten times in a span of a year. Now the situation is worsened as government is restricting LPG usage by making it unaffordable to the majority population”, the protesters said.
They also demanded a reduction on the prices of basic amenities such as food, fuel and transportation.
The JMS meanwhile has decided to stage protests in front of government granaries all across the nation in days to come.
The demonstration was led by Sukanya, President, JMS and Sajida, Secretary.
