Kasargod, August 10: The anti-endosulfan action committee on Wednesday staged a protest against the stance of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Indian Council of AgricultureResearch (ICAR) in favour of the endosulfan manufacturers.
Addressing media persons here, the anti-endosulfan action committee leaders Narayanan Peria, K B Mohammed Kunhi and T C Madhava Panicker alleged that the two central government institutions took a favourable stand towards the dndosulfan manufacturers by taking into account the version of the company.
The committee said it was unlawful for the endosulfan manufacturers to ask for details of the victims under the Right to Information Act. The committee said that the endosulfan manufacturers are likely to influence the victims and their families.
The statement of health minister Adoor Prakash that a fresh study on the endosulfan issue should be made was unfortunate, it said.
The committee demanded implementation of the recommendations of the National Human Rights Commission and said steps should be taken to give compensation to more victims.
The action committee said that noted environmental activist Medha Patkar would inaugurate the Panchayat level agitation in the first week of September. As first step of the agitation, the functioning of the CPCRI under the ICAR would be paralysed. The CPCRI would be blockaded for 11 days by people from 11 affected Gram Panchayat.
