Mangalore, August 12: A south India level children's art fest is underway at Hotel Deepa Comforts in the city.
Former Union Minister B Janardhana Poojary inaugurated the 'Makkala Kala Mela-2011' organised by Sri Chakrapani Fine Arts and Educational Trust (SCFAET).
Over one hundred students from different parts of India including Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Pondicherry and Karnataka are participating in the event.
Out of over 900 students from six states, who had participated in selection process, only 108 students were selected for this final round, according to K Harish Kumar, Honorary President, SCFAET.
Speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural session, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer K N Vijayaprakash laid emphasis on the importance of art and the role it plays in children's life.
Entrepreneur A J Shetty presided over the prgramme. Renowned artist K P Shenoy was also present.
The contest is being held in five separate categories for students of different classes.
An exhibition of the paintings of children was also inaugurated on the occasion. Noted city based painter Sayyed Asif Ali guided art enthusiasts about the basics of painting.
