Mangalore, August 16: Dakshina Kannada Anti-Corruption Forum, a union of many organisations went on a one-day fast in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office in support of Anna Hazare's campaign against the UPA government on the issue of the Jan Lokpal Bill.
Leading the hunger strike, Namadev Shenoy, freedom fighter and Gandhian encouraged the participants to fight for justice. “We should fight together in the path of truth and non-violence”, he said addressing the people who had come in support of the anti-corruption bill.
He observed that India won't be independent unless every village in India enjoys independence.
T R Bhat, Convenor of the Forum in his inaugural address stressed the importance of a strong and effective Lokpal for a successful democracy. “It is the best way out of institutionalised corruption”, he said.
He opined that the Bill proposed by the Government does not meet the requirements put forward by Team Anna. “It is a toothless bill”, he observed.
“Poor are affected most by corruption. The rich have used corruption to oppress the poor people in our society”, he said referring to the injustice done to the Kudubi community while acquiring land for the Mangalore Special Economic Zone.
Around 50 people are taking part in the hunger strike, which is expected to conclude at 6 p.m.
