Mangalore, August 19: In yet another incidence of assault under the pretext of cow protection, a cattle trader and his two associates have been brutally beaten up by a gang in Kananjaru, under the Hiriyadka police station limits.

The gang of around 20 miscreants waylaid the vehicle in which the trio were transporting a cow and a male calf for raring. The injured have been identified as K.M. Umarabba (50), a resident of Kalathur village in Kaup, Ibrahim, (38), a resident of Chandragiri in Janatha colony in the same village and Ranjit (17), from Shirva.

Umarabba and Ibrahim have sustained grievous injuries during the attack and have been undergoing treatment at the District Hospital in Udupi while Ranjit has been discharged after being administered first aid at the hospital.

Umarabba, the cattle trader, had been returning home after purchasing a cow and a calf from Jagadish Shetty, from Kanajaru, when a team consisting of Suresh, Santhosh, Prakash and 17 others waylaid the vehicle near Church compound after chasing them in their Omni car and two wheelers. According to the complaint filed by Umarabba with the Hiriyadka police, the gang then assaulted him with lethal weapons.

After beating up Umarabba and Ibrahim black and blue, the gang dumped them near the church compound and fled the scene. The duo were shifted to the hospital by an ambulance, apparently summoned by the people who spotted the duo whining in pain. Umarabba was admitted to udupi district hospital while Ibrahim was admitted at the Karkala hospital. But, the relatives of Ibrahim shifted him to the Udupi district hospital on Wednesday evening.

Umarabba, speaking to 'Varthabharathi', has clarified that he had been a trader in cattle for the past 15 years and selling the cows to farmers in Shimoga, Thirthahalli and other places after purchasing them locally.

He also claimed that he had given an advance of Rs. 3,000 to Jaggu Shetty about a couple of weeks ago for purchase of a cow and a calf. As I was not well, I had been to his house this morning and was returning home with the animals, he said.

The gang also snatched about 15,000 Rs from their pocket and a mobile phone after threatening them by holding a talwar against their necks, Umarabba alleged.

Umarabba has sustained injuries on his right shoulder, back, legs, hand and groin. Ibrahim has been hit on his legs. He had been working with Umarabba for the last three years and was on the wheel when the incident took place.

Umarabba also said that only 7-8 people in the gang were involved in the assault while the rest gave them moral support. A case has been registered at the Hiriyadka police station in this regard.

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has instructed the Hindu Religious Endowment Department to submit a proposal for constructing a gold chariot for the presiding deity of the state, Chamundeshwari, official sources said on Monday.

The directive follows a request from Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Dinesh Gooligowda, who highlighted the historical and cultural significance of the Chamundeshwari Temple on Chamundi Hill in Mysuru, which dates back to the 12th century AD.

Gooligowda noted that the existing wooden chariot, donated by devotees from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, has deteriorated over time.

“Devotees have expressed their desire to organise a ‘rathotsava’ using a gold chariot for Goddess Chamundeshwari. This proposal has been under consideration for some time, with an estimated cost of Rs 100 crore,” the MLC said.

He emphasised that the government’s financial involvement would not be required, as devotees are willing to contribute towards making the chariot a reality.

Gooligowda proposed a deadline for the 2025 Dasara festival for the completion of the chariot, ensuring it is ready for the grand procession featuring the idol of Chamundeshwari.

Bengaluru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Thursday backed Chief Minister Siddaramaiah over his claim that the BJP had offered Rs 50 crore each to 50 Congress MLAs in an attempt to "topple" the state government.

Addressing reporters here, Shivakumar, also the Congress state president, said, “The BJP indeed lured 50 Congress MLAs with Rs 50 crore each.”

He defended Siddaramaiah’s statement and said the Congress MLAs were briefed about the BJP’s alleged 'Operation Lotus', a term used to describe the BJP's attempts to destabilise ruling governments through horse-trading.

“Some of our MLAs informed the Chief Minister about this matter, and he, in turn, shared it with the media,” Shivakumar said.

At an event in Mysuru, Siddaramaiah reiterated the claim that "none of the Congress MLAs had accepted the offer".

He also accused the BJP of filing false cases against him in a bid to "remove him and overthrow his government".

The BJP has yet to respond to the allegations.

Mangaluru: A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday, November 17, at Vazco Resort (VAZCO), situated at Battappadi Cross Road in Someshwara on the outskirts of the city, when three young women drowned in the resort’s swimming pool.

Disturbingly, an iPhone recording and CCTV footage captured their final moments, providing insights into the heartbreaking accident.

According to City Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal, the tragedy occurred at approximately 10:05 AM. The victims were identified as:

Keerthana N (21) from Devaraj Mohalla, Hebbal Second Stage, Vijayanagar Post.
Nishitha M.D (21) from 4th Cross, Kuribarahalli, Mysuru.
Parvathi S (20) from Ramanuja Road, K.R. Mohalla, Mysuru.

Sequence of Events

The three women had checked into Room No. 2 of the resort on the morning of November 16 and stayed overnight. On Sunday morning, around 10 AM, they entered the swimming pool to play. Reports suggest that they placed their clothes poolside and set an iPhone to record the activity.

Initial findings indicate one woman slipped underwater and began to struggle. When the second attempted a rescue, she too drowned, followed by the third woman. Within minutes, the tragedy claimed all three lives. CCTV footage from the resort corroborates the sequence, showing the young women struggling before succumbing to the water.

Investigation Underway

The resort staff discovered the lifeless bodies and immediately raised the alarm. Ullal Police Inspector H N Balakrishna and his team are conducting an investigation. Preliminary reports suggest the women were non-swimmers, and the lack of safety measures contributed to the tragedy.

The resort is owned by Manohar, as per police records. While the formal case is yet to be registered, the incident has raised serious questions about safety protocols at resorts offering pool facilities.
