Mangalore, August 24: The three people arrested at Kottara Chowki for ganja peddling by the Urwa police, have been remanded to judicial custody by a local court. A Maruthi Zen was also seized from the accused during the interrogation. Police have gathered information about several others involved in the racket.
Daakappa (35), Shivappa (30), residents of a resident of Ananthpur, Sagar and Puneeth Shetty, a resident of Shakthi Nagar were arrested by a team headed by Sub-Inspector P Suresh of Urwa station and seized 800 grams of ganja, five mobile phones and a Maruthi Zen worth Rs 5lakhs.
They were under police custody for three days.
Police have confirmed that the car owned by Puneeth Shetty which was used for peddling was seized. He was involved in peddling previously and had evaded the police.
It is said he had targeted four prominent colleges of Mangalore in his illicit deal and ganja was being sold with a code word “score”.
Police has said that the numbers of addicts in the region are high. They have received information about several others involved in the racket.
In the past week several people including four students were arrested in connection with ganja peddling in different parts of the city.
An officer from the police department informed that a person caught selling less than a kilogram of ganja would be subjected to six months of imprisonment and would be fined up to Rs 10000.
If caught selling more than a kilogram, law suggests punishment of 10 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh. If caught twice in the same offence, the accused can be imprisoned for life. He also informed that using of illicit drugs is also a punishable offence.
