Mangalore, August 29: An old woman was cheated of a gold chain and a cash amount of Rs 3,000 by a smooth-talking youth at Hampankatta here on Sunday.
Gouramma (65), a resident of Beedekatte, Somavarpet was waiting for a bus in Bantwal, to visit her relatives in Punjalkatte. She was approached by a youth who tricked her to believing that she was his mother's friend. He is said to have tricked for her help to release his mother's widow pension from a bank in Mangalore. He claimed to have been in a bad economical state.
He took Gouramma to Mangalore and asked for Rs 3000 money, which he said, was necessary to release the pension from the bank immediately. He also had asked for more money, for which Gowramma had given him a gold chain of three pawan in order to help him.
She waited for the youth to return her belongings near the bank in which the youth had claimed to release money. She grew suspicious as the youth did not return.
After realising that she was cheated Gouramma decided to lodge a complaint in Bunder Police Station in the evening.
