Ullal, September 4: The sea erosion which was common in Ullal has shifted its course to Ucchila near Someshwar for the last three days.
Several trees and a compound wall was washed away in the sea waves. Sea erosion has increased at Batteppadu, Kote, Beribailu near Ucchila. “This is the first time we are experiencing sea erosion,” said a villager.
Though areas in Kaiko and Mogaveerapattana were experiencing sea erosion for the last 25 years, this year, the sea erosion has started eroding several metres of shore in other regions. MLA U T Khader who visited the spot directed the officials from Port department to take measures to check sea erosion.
Udyavar
Meanwhile, the sea erosion which started at Udyavar Padukere on Friday, intensified on Saturday. All the stones and boulders dumped to check sea erosion are being swallowed by huge sea waves. As waves started lashing Fisheries Road, the road too is likely to be washed away.
The villagers alleged that though sea erosion has increased in the last two days, none of the officials visited the region. The MLA who had visited the affected areas during July had promised of permanent solution to check sea erosion, they said.
Sea erosion has intensified in Udyavara, Kopla, Padukere and Kanakoda. The Ports and Fisheries department has submitted a proposal of Rs 4 crore to construct temporary sea walls.
Last year, a sum of Rs 62.45 lakh was spent for constructing temporary sea walls. As sea erosion has increased from Shiroor to Bada Ermal, the work on constructing temporary retaining wall is being laid at the cost of Rs 2.4 crore. About 40 per cent of the work has been completed, said Ports and Fisheries department Assistant Engineer Santhosh Kumar to Deccan Herald.
