Mangalore, September 6: Three youths from Dakshina Kannada district are languishing in a Jeddah jail for the past seven years, according to reports that have come to light recently.

The three youths in the age group of 33 and 34 are spending days behind the bars after being slapped with fines by a local court in Jeddah. The trio have not been able to pay up due to their economic conditions and with nobody to take up their cause legally they have been confined to the four walls of the jail in a distant land.

The three who have been condemned to imprisonment are Fairoz Abdul Rahman D Mohammed (34) from Kotepura Ullal, Abdul Rafeeq (33) from Bajpe and Mohammed Nasir from Bunder (33).

The trio had flown to Saudi Arabia in search of employment. After the initial difficult days they managed to find either a small job or took up a minor business and stayed together in a rented room. Unfortunately, the room they hired had been previously occupied by a group that was involved in illegal telephone service network, generally known as Hundi.

The gang had vacated after their racket was busted and were about to be nabbed by the local police. However, the three Mangalore youth were not aware of the antecedents of the previous occupiers and hired the same room. Within few days, the local police raided the room following a complaint by the Saudi telecom authorities. The trio were taken away by the police and were lodged in a prison in Jeddah.

The trio were behind bars without any trial for a couple of years. When the trial finally began, they could not defend themselves due to lack of legal knowledge and unavailability of any legal help. After a prolonged hearing, the court slapped heavy fines on the trio. Since they could not pay the massive fine, they had to remain behind the bars for years.

The family members of the trio have already approached Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Foreign Minister S.M. Krishna seeking their release. The parents of the trio are cursing their fate as their sons had been condemned to ignominy for no fault of theirs. Despite sustained efforts they have not been able to secure any concrete assurance about their release.

“We had come here with hopes and aspirations of a better tomorrow. It was the night of March 19-20, 2004 which changed our destiny for good. The Saudi police raided our room and rounded up all of us. They said that we were part of a Hundi call racked. We pleaded innocence. But they would not agree. Language was also a barrier. They made us to sign on some documents written in Arabic. They asked us to give information about the people involved in in the racket. They also assured us that we would be released once they got the real culprits,” says Fairoz, in one of the letters he had written to his parents.

“We were detained at a police station for nearly 45 days for interrogation. Subsequently we were taken to a court in Jeddah and put behind bars. The trial began after three years. The judge would not listen to our pleas. Finally the judge his verdict and declared all of us guilty. We were asked to pay a fine of 10,000 Saudi Riyal. In addition to that we were also ordered to pay 3 million Riyal as damages to the Saudi telecom. This would work out to nearly one crore Indian rupees for each one of us,” he says.

“From where can we pool such a big amount? We came here with the hope of making a difference to our poverty stricken lives. We had no option but to appeal in a higher court. But unfortunately, the higher court upheld the lower court's verdict. We are condemned to the cells of this prison for the past seven and half years. We do not have anyone who can fight for our cause,” says Fairoz.

In the heart of Mangaluru, where rising air pollution is spurring public health worries, voices are calling for a greener, cleaner shift in the city’s public transport. Leading this call is APD Foundation, a Mangaluru-based environmental NGO, which has urged Forest, Ecology, and Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre to mandate electric vehicle (EV) adoption in public transport.

Abdullah A Rehman, CEO of APD Foundation, emphasized in a formal letter to the minister that Mangaluru’s public transportation system—efficient and organized with both government and private players—could transition smoothly to EVs in stages. He suggested that government-backed financial incentives, partnerships with EV manufacturers, and collaborations with environmental groups could streamline the switch.

Rehman stressed the potential of EVs to cut down emissions, enhance air quality, and reduce noise levels, noting the quieter operation of electric buses. He confirmed that a copy of his letter was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner as well.

However, Dilraj Alva from the Dakshina Kannada City Bus Association noted potential challenges, explaining that the shift might take up to two years due to infrastructure and budget hurdles. Most EV buses, he explained, are procured through aggregators, not directly by individual operators. The addition of charging stations and other essential infrastructure further complicates the transition.

Alva also raised the economic concern: while diesel buses are priced between ₹30-40 lakh, electric buses can cost up to ₹1 crore. Reflecting on recent meetings with companies, including one in Manipal, he questioned the assumption that EVs are an absolute solution to pollution. “EVs aren’t entirely eco-friendly, especially when considering battery disposal,” he cautioned.

Bengaluru: Amidst the ongoing Waqf controversy in the state, a Vokkaliga seer has sparked controversy by suggesting the disenfranchisement of Muslims, claiming it would end vote bank politics in India.

The provocative remarks were made by Kumara Chandrashekaranatha Swami during a protest organized by the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh, a farmers’ organization with links to the RSS. The protest focused on farmers' lands being marked as Waqf properties.

"Politicians are exploiting this issue for votes. Muslims should be deprived of voting rights. This step is necessary to eliminate vote bank politics and allow India to prosper," the seer stated. He is the head of the Vishwa Vokkaliga Mahasamsthana Mutt, which was founded with support from JD(S) leader and former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda.

The seer also made misleading claims about Pakistan, stating, “In Pakistan, minorities don’t have the right to vote. If we implement the same in India, Muslims would be isolated, and peace would prevail.” However, minorities in Pakistan have voting rights.

Chandrashekaranatha Swami continued his criticism of the Waqf Board, accusing it of unlawfully seizing properties. “It is unjust to take someone’s property. We must ensure that the Waqf Board is abolished,” he said. He further emphasized the need for farmers' land to remain protected, even at the cost of political fallout.

Minister Condemns Remarks

Minister for Social Welfare, H.C. Mahadevappa, swiftly condemned the seer’s comments, stating, “After years of struggle, Baba Saheb Dr. B.R. Ambedkar established the principle of ‘one vote, one value.’ It is crucial for Dalits, backward communities, and minorities to understand its significance.”

He continued, "Those who spread hatred for political gain under the guise of religion must end their harmful rhetoric."

Earlier, Kumara Chandrashekaranatha Swami had stirred controversy by suggesting that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah step down to allow Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar to assume the role of Chief Minister for the remainder of the term. The statement created a fresh political debate, raising questions about the power dynamics in Karnataka's ruling party.

The seer remarked, “Everyone has had the opportunity to hold the Chief Minister’s position, except D.K. Shivakumar. I request our experienced Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to vacate the post and bless Shivakumar with the opportunity.”

Former minister and ex-MLC C M Ibrahim claimed that he still heads the original JD(S) and asked former prime minister and party supremo H D Deve Gowda to cut ties with the BJP, so that the party can be strengthened again. He also said options are being explored to either strengthen the JD(S) or to float a new regional party.

He was speaking to media persons, in Mysuru, on Monday, after meeting JD(S) MLA and former minister G T Deve Gowda, who has expressed his displeasure that he has been sidelined in the party and the party leaders have indicated his retirement from politics.

He stated, “If Deve Gowda had joined the Congress, during the last Assembly election, he would have been a minister now. We retained him in the JD(S), to strengthen the party. Now, efforts are being made to strangulate Deve Gowda’s political career. I have discussed all matters with Deve Gowda. In two days, I will start a Karnataka state tour and meet some leaders. After that, I will meet Deve Gowda again, and then decide on the further course of action.”

Ibrahim said, “The original JD(S) is ours. I am still its state president. All documents and accounts are in our name. Even now, if Deve Gowda leaves BJP’s company and returns, we will build the JD(S) again”.

“Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy should mend his ways and stop making JD(S) into a family-owned company. The JD(S)’s situation has become hopeless. Its love for the BJP is over. He should understand this,” he said.

“When I was with Kumaraswamy, he spent just Rs 4 crore in Channapatna and won by 20,000 votes. Now, without me, he spent Rs 150 crore and still lost by 25,000 votes. Without Muslims’ support, the JD(S) cannot win a single seat. Now, it is proved that 19 MLAs of the JD(S) won in 2023, because of Muslims,” he added.

Speaking on other options available, Ibrahim said, “We have not yet decided to go with the Congress. We are only considering to establish a third front. Whether it is founding a new regional party, forming a third front, or strengthening the JD(S), will be decided shortly.”

Earlier during the day, before meeting Deve Gowda, Ibrahim had said, that 12 to 13 JD(S) MLAs were dissatisfied with the party, but like Deve Gowda, were enduring pain.

“Now, I have started the task of uniting them. I as the JD(S) state president, it is my responsibility to address our MLAs’ grievances. At present, the JD(S) is on fire and all JD(S) MLAs want to protect their respective constituency. Hence, they have started speaking one by one,” he said.
