Mangalore, September 18: A rresident of Panjimogaru area of the city has alleged that Panambur police tortured him for four days to force him to say that he had carried out the Panjimogaru double murder of a woman and her daughter.

Speaking from his bed at the Highland Hospital, Musheer (24), said that the police allegedly abused him by meting out cruel treatment. He said he was given only one meal a day, but he could not eat because of the pain. Before being let off on Thursday, he was threatened with an “encounter” if he told anybody about the ordeal, he said.

“They beat me every hour. What sort of inquiry is this? Around 15 people took turns in beating me. Some of them told me that they were doctors, but they too beat me,” Mr. Musheer said. The police kept telling him to “confess” to the double murder, and say that it was Hamid who had paid him to carry it out, he added.

Mr. Musheer said that an officer told him to come to the Panambur police station on September 12 as he “wanted a word” with him. The officer had met him during a visit to the house of Hamid's (the husband of the murdered woman Razya) elder brother where he (Musheer) and his wife were living on rent.

He said that he was taken to the police station from Jokatte in a Maruti 800. When he alighted from the car, the officer took the key of his motorcycle and his mobile phone, he said. On seeing nine men come from behind the police station, Mr. Museheer said that he got scared and started to run. However, the men caught him and took him to a room behind the police station, but in the same compound.

For four days, he was given tea in the morning and a meal with pickle in the afternoon. However, Mr. Musheer said that he could not eat it because of the pain. They also gave him tablets over four days, which he thinks were painkillers.

Meanwhile, reacting to Musheer's claim that police had forced him to confess to carrying out the murder at the behest of Razia's husband, Hamid reiterated that he and the members of his family were ready for any investigation. "We have been repeatedly saying that the we are ready to face even CBI investigation. I have also said that I am ready for narco analysis test," he said.

Reacting to allegations of abuse, Valentine D'Souza, the Inspector of Police, Panambur, said that the police have not tortured him. In fact, he was facing a couple of cases. We have only questioned him in connection with the double murder case. We produced him before the tahsildar and let him off, he claimed.

Mangaluru, Apr 7: The long-standing demand for a separate Beary Development Corporation has hit a wall — the Karnataka government has officially stated that no such proposal is currently under consideration.

Beary-speaking people, mainly settled across Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and parts of Kodagu, have been urging the government to set up a dedicated body for the welfare of their community and the promotion of their unique 1,200-year-old language. But during the recent legislative session, Minority Affairs Minister B.Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan confirmed that his department has not received any proposal on this matter.

The clarification came in response to a question by MLC Ivan D’Souza, who highlighted the community’s cultural richness and a population of over 25 lakh. “The community has raised this demand several times to support education and social upliftment, but the government hasn’t taken any concrete steps,” he said.

In his reply, the minister pointed out that the Karnataka Minorities Development Corporation (KMDC) already runs various welfare schemes for Muslim, Christian, Jain, Buddhist, Sikh, and Parsi communities. Since Beary speakers are considered part of the Muslim community, they are eligible for benefits under these existing programs, he added.

Still, many in the Beary community feel that without a separate development body, their identity, language, and specific needs risk being overlooked.

Mangaluru: Meet Deepashree S, the state topper in the Commerce stream of the PU 2 exams, scoring an astonishing 599 out of 600. A student of Canara PU College, Deepashree had an inkling of success but admits the first rank was beyond her wildest dreams.

“All our doubts were cleared in the classroom itself,” she said, praising her lecturers. “Their concept-based teaching helped me understand everything thoroughly. I also made it a habit to revise daily.”

Planning her future early, Deepashree is already taking CA coaching and is all set to appear for the CA Foundation exam in May. Her next step? An integrated BCom with CA.

Daughter of Ashok S and Suma P, Deepashree is also a Carnatic classical singer, and attributes her sharp concentration to her love for music.

“Hard work matters, but yes, luck plays a part too,” she added with a wise smile — proving that success is a fine mix of talent, effort, and grace.

deeksha.jpg

Shivamogga: From the serene town of Thirthahalli, Deeksha R, a bright student of Vagdevi Pre-University College, has made her mark on the state stage by sharing the first rank in the Science stream of the PU 2 examinations. She scored an outstanding 599 out of 600, tying with Amoolya Kamath of Mangaluru.

Deeksha is the daughter of Raghavendra Kalkura and Usha V, both committed educators. Her father, a teacher at the Government High School in Megaravalli, said with joy, “We were expecting around 595 marks. But 599 was a surprise and a moment of pure happiness. Deeksha didn’t study daily in a strict routine, but she was focused and had a well-planned approach. During her study holidays, I helped her prioritise subjects based on need.”

Deeksha's academic brilliance isn’t new — she had earlier scored 98.6% in Grade 10 (ICSE) at Sahyadri School, Bettamakki. Her PU college teachers recognised her potential early and provided strong support throughout.

Looking ahead, Deeksha has big ambitions — she plans to pursue a career in Artificial Intelligence engineering. She has already appeared for the JEE exams and is preparing for the CET next week. “We’re hopeful she’ll secure a seat in a top engineering college,” her father added.

College Principal Mamata expressed immense pride: “Deeksha never attended any tuition outside of college. Her discipline and commitment were remarkable. It’s a proud moment for our college and our town.”

By sharing the top rank in the state, Deeksha has not only brought glory to her hometown but also become a symbol of how talent, discipline, and the right guidance can create a truly stellar success story.
