State govt ignores a crash course

Mangalore, September 18: On May 22, 2010, Mangalore airport had the worst air crash in its 61-year history, when an Air India Express Boeing 737-800 aircraft from Dubai overshot the runway here and crashed into a 300-metre deep valley, killing 158 people on board.

At least 50 to 60 lives of flight AIE-812 could have been saved had fire tenders at the airport reached the crash site. They could not, because of the ramshackle state of the perimeter road around the airport. Precious six minutes were lost before the state-of-the-art crash fire tenders (CFT) reached the spot the crashed aircraft lying in the valley at Kenjar. Measuring 13 metres by 3.25 metres, they could not negotiate the hairpin curves on the perimeter road.

“Had the CFT reached the spot within two minutes as they should have, if not all, at least 50 to 60 passengers could have been saved,” say sources in the fire department, a view acknowledged by experts. Sixteen months later, things have not changed. The condition of the perimeter road is bad as ever, with more potholes. The hairpin curves remain and landslides on the road are posing more danger than ever before.

What if an aircraft overshoots the runway, again? The result will be similar or more disastrous as the perimeter road has been completely damaged. Thanks to the lackadaisical attitude of the authorities concerned, especially the State government, the crash fire tenders cannot move on the road even to this day!

According to experts, the best comparison that throws up the deficiency in the Mangalore crash is the post accident fire that destroyed the AFA 340 overrun at Toronto in Canada in 2005.

All the 305 on board survived due to the immediate rescue and fire fighting response; emergency response teams were reportedly on site within 52 seconds of the crash occuring.

“Lessons from the tragic AIE-812 crash, if ignored, will result in more accidents,” says a former pilot.

Airport chief rues inaction

When asked about the pathetic condition of the road, Airport Director M?R?Vasudeva said he had requested the district administration and the State government to repair the perimeter road, soon after the crash.

“A number of reminders too have been sent to the district administration as well as State government to repair the road in view of the possible danger, but nothing has been done till date,” he rues.

Deputy Commissioner N?S?Chennappa Gowda said there was no proposal to repair the perimeter road.

Proposals

“There are only two proposals, that is, to evict the Deccan Park and also to extend the runway, but there is no proposal to repair the perimeter road.”

Given the present condition of the road, in case if the aircraft lands in the valley between the two runways (06-24 and 09-27), any vehicle will require a minimum of 15 minutes to reach the spot, by which time, the plane would have been reduced to ashes.

But then, the government takes no action unless there is a tragedy. Which is a tragedy.

Mangaluru, Nov 28: In a major breakthrough, police have arrested Rahul, alias Bol Karmaveer Eshwar Jat, a Haryana native, for a brutal train murder committed on October 25. Rahul, a notorious interstate serial offender, was apprehended after a relentless investigation involving multiple state police forces.

The October 25 incident occurred during a train journey when Rahul got into an argument over a cigarette with Mauzzam, a resident of Chikkaballapur. The altercation escalated, leading to Rahul strangling Mauzzam to death. He fled the scene with the victim’s mobile phone, bag, and cash.

Muazzan worked as a sales representative and was differently-abled. He boarded the train on October 24 from Yesvantpur and occupied the Divyang Coach. The incident came to light on the morning of October 25 at Udupi, where a railway guard found Muazzam unresponsive. The railway police immediately rushed him to the hospital, but doctors declared him dead.

Accused Rahul was tracked down through an exhaustive review of over 2,000 CCTV recordings by police teams from Valsad, Vapi, Surat, and Udvada. His identity was eventually confirmed by a vigilant officer from Surat Central Jail, leading to his capture in a joint operation by Railway and Surat police.

Rahul’s criminal record reveals a trail of horrifying offenses across Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, Haryana, and West Bengal. Among these are the rape of a mentally ill minor girl in Pune and the rape and murder of a 19-year-old woman near Udvada railway station in Gujarat's Vapi district. Despite being arrested in the past, Rahul resumed his crimes after securing bail.

On November 19, he allegedly stabbed a 60-year-old man to death aboard the Katihar Express in West Bengal, with a case registered at the Howrah police station. In Telangana, he confessed to murdering a woman in yet another shocking crime.

Public Advisory:

  • Stay vigilant when traveling on trains, especially during late hours.
  • Report suspicious individuals or activities to railway authorities immediately.
  • Ensure your personal belongings are secure while traveling.
  • This arrest brings a sense of relief, but the investigations continue as authorities piece together the full extent of Rahul’s crimes.

Bengaluru, Nov 22: For the second day running, the Karnataka BJP on Friday staged a statewide protest condemning the government’s alleged move to notify land of farmers as Waqf property.

The BJP staged a protest before the offices of Deputy Commissioners at district headquarters.

The BJP leaders are vehemently demanding that the state government cancel a 1974 Gazette notification in this regard.

The agitators are also demanding scrapping of the Waqf Board and the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Minister for Waqf and Housing Zameer Ahmad Khan.

The BJP MLAs, MLCs, MPs gathered in the premises of Freedom Park and staged a protest under the leadership of Leader of Opposition R. Ashoka and slammed the state government.

MLA T.S. Srivatsa led the protest in Mysuru and hundreds of party workers and farmers staged the protest under the leadership of former MP Pratap Simha in Kodagu.

Former MP Sumalatha Ambareesh led the agitation in Mandya.

This was the first time that Sumalatha took part in the party’s programme after the Lok Sabha elections.

State President B.Y. Vijayendra claimed, “The Congress government in Karnataka is issuing notices to farmers claiming the ownership of their lands to the Waqf Board and pushing them on the streets overnight.”

In the first week of December, three teams formed by the BJP will travel across the state and record the grievances of farmers.

“The state government is attempting to snatch away the lands belonging to temples as well,” Vijayendra alleged and added that the teams would comprise all senior leaders of the BJP.

Meanwhile, the police have taken Sri Ram Sena chief Pramod Muthalik into custody while staging a protest march to the office of Zameer Ahmad Khan in Bengaluru.

Muthalik along with Hindutva activists was planning to lay siege to Zameer’s office over the Waqf row.

The police stopped Muthalik and requested him to submit the memorandum by reaching the minister’s office in a vehicle. However, Muthalik refused to go with the police and continued his footmarch. The police took him into custody following arguments.
