Expose students to turf cricket and technology: Javagal Srinath

September 25, 2011

Mangalore, September 25: Former fast bowler for the Indian cricket team Javagal Srinath advice the cricket-loving boys to keep at cricket until the age of around 20, as that is the time their fitness would be at the best.

Interacting with media persons in the city on Sunday, the 'Mysore Express' Srinath said that even if boys are not chosen to play in under-15 tournaments they should not lose heart, as it is around the age of 19 years that most boys go through a “growth spurt”, which would make their body extremely fit for the game.“Boys should give an “honest try” to the game until the age of about 20 years”, he said.

There was a need to expose students to turf cricket and technology so that their talent is utilised efficiently. Otherwise, they would practice on the field and not be able to perform as well on a turf pitch, Mr. Srinath said.

The goal was to bring international practices to the mofussil level and provide basic infrastructure, he added.

The Cricket Academy, an arm of the State Association, should continue to function throughout the year except during the exams and provide training to children. The aim should be providing training to around 150 children over a period of two years.

Mr. Srinath said that the association had seen two privately held potential sites for cricket grounds, but nothing had yet come of it. He said that in Raichur, Mysore, Shimoga the State cricket association, had set up grounds where children could play, and Mangalore was the odd man out. Bangalore had three grounds, he added.

It would have been ideal if the Nehru Maidan was available, but since it was not, around two acres of land that were close to the city would be necessary, he said.

Udupi: A 53-year-old woman fell victim to a sophisticated online fraud, losing ₹19.7 lakh to scammers posing as officials from telecom companies and the police.

According to the complaint filed by Vidya, the incident began on October 4 when she received a call from an individual claiming to be from Airtel. The caller alleged that a SIM card linked to her Aadhaar was being misused in Mumbai for spam and fraudulent activities. They warned her that all her mobile numbers could be blocked and connected her to a supposed "Sahara police station."

A man identifying himself as Mohan Kumar, an "investigation officer" from the Sahara police station, then contacted Vidya. He alleged that a fraudulent bank account had been opened in her name at an SBI branch in Mumbai. This account, he claimed, was being used for human trafficking and money laundering activities by someone named Vivek Das. He insisted that all her bank accounts needed to be reviewed.

On October 5, the scam escalated when Kumar, posing as a police officer, threatened Vidya with arrest and warned her not to leave her location without his permission. He demanded that she transfer funds from her accounts to specific UPI IDs and bank accounts under the pretext of "reviewing" her finances. Fearing legal consequences, Vidya complied and transferred ₹19.7 lakh in installments between October 16 and November 7.

The fraud came to light only after she realized she had been deceived. A case has been registered at the CEN (Cyber, Economic, and Narcotics) police station, and an investigation is underway.

Public Warning:

  • Beware of unsolicited calls claiming to be from telecom companies, banks, or police stations.
  • Never share sensitive personal or banking details over the phone.
  • Always verify the identity of callers through official channels before taking any action.
  • If in doubt, contact your local police or cybercrime cell immediately.
  • Stay vigilant to avoid falling prey to such scams!

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has instructed the Hindu Religious Endowment Department to submit a proposal for constructing a gold chariot for the presiding deity of the state, Chamundeshwari, official sources said on Monday.

The directive follows a request from Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Dinesh Gooligowda, who highlighted the historical and cultural significance of the Chamundeshwari Temple on Chamundi Hill in Mysuru, which dates back to the 12th century AD.

Gooligowda noted that the existing wooden chariot, donated by devotees from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, has deteriorated over time.

“Devotees have expressed their desire to organise a ‘rathotsava’ using a gold chariot for Goddess Chamundeshwari. This proposal has been under consideration for some time, with an estimated cost of Rs 100 crore,” the MLC said.

He emphasised that the government’s financial involvement would not be required, as devotees are willing to contribute towards making the chariot a reality.

Gooligowda proposed a deadline for the 2025 Dasara festival for the completion of the chariot, ensuring it is ready for the grand procession featuring the idol of Chamundeshwari.
