Honnavar, September 29: A senior Forest officer was brutally assaulted on Thursday by one Manjunath Devaru Bhat, at Karki village near here.
The victim is Ashok Bhat, Deputy Conservator of Forest of Honnavar. A seriously injured Bhat was rushed to the hospital in Honnavar and then shifted to Mangalore for further treatment.
The incident occurred a couple of hours after Mr Bhat along with his subordinates raided an area near Arolli village where the teak wood was allegedly being smuggled by a group of smugglers.
It is said that two people arrested during the raid –Jayaram Mohan Marathe from Mahime village and Suresh Madev Naik from Bailgadde – told that they had been trying to transport the wood to the house of Manjunath Devaru Bhat.
When Mr Ashok Bhat visited Manjunath Bhat's house, the latter became wild and attacked the former. Later, Manjunath Bhat was arrested by the police.
