Woman in hospital after enduring “police torture”

October 1, 2011
Mangalore, October 1: A Sub Inspector of Karkala police station and two constables are facing accusations of torturing a woman, who has been admitted to a hospital in Mangalore following the incident which happened in Gurupur Kaikamba on Friday.

Zainaba, the victim, was allegedly assaulted by Sub-Inspector Pramod and two constables, who had barged into her residence apparently looking for her son Ibrahim. Zainaba's husband Abdul Khader was not at home during the incident. Zainaba, who panicked on seeing the police, was pushed aside by the SI before entering the house, according to a complaint filed by her brother Zakariya.

Zainab allegedly fell on the ground and sustained head injuries. Pramod also kicked her on the chest leaving her whining in pain. She apparently fell unconscious and was rushed to the hospital, where she is being treated in the intensive care area. Zakariya also alleged that Ibrahim has been picked up by the police without any valid reason and has been trapped in a conspiracy hatched by others.

Meanwhile, Dr. Sabina, the doctor treating the victim, confirmed that Zainaba had sustained injuries on the head and chest. Even the echocardiography report shows that her condition is serious.

However, Pramod, the police officer in the centre of the controversy, has clarified that he had not assaulted the woman. She was pushed aside as she was not letting them enter their residence. Her son Ibrahim was an accused in a case related to the theft of a tipper, he added.
