Mangalore, October 10: Chaos prevailed at a private hospital, here, on Monday, after a 19-year-old girl died after she reportedly underwent two unsuccessful surgeries for the removal of her appendix.
Zabeena, daughter of late T Husain and B Fathima couple, from Thokur House Addoor, breathed her last in the morning apparently due to the negligence on part of the surgeon, according to the family doctor of the deceased.
T Sayyad, the uncle of the victim said that the girl had been admitted to SCS Hospital on October 4 after she complained of severe abdominal pain. She was then diagnosed with appendicitis.
Veteran surgeon of the city Dr Shubhakar Bhandari carried out the operation to remove her appendix on October 5 and the hospital asked the family members to take the girl home on October 7.
However, the family members, who noticed that the girl's body had turned blue, called Dr Muneer, their family doctor. After a check-up Dr Muneer pointed out the fault in operation and negligence following the operation, due to which the infection had spread inside her body.
Admitting his mistake, Dr Shubhakar Bhandari decided for second surgery on October 7 evening.
However, Zabeena breathed her last around 9:00 am. According to Dr Muneer, it was necessary to check the blood pressure of the girl for every two hours after the surgery.
Angered by the negligence of the surgeon and hospital management, neighbours and relatives of the girl have gathered on the hospital premises, seeking explanation.
“We know that no doctor can bring back our child's life. But, we demand that the aged doctor, should publicly admit his blunder”, said T Sayyad.
Kadri and Pandeshwar police visited the spot. Dr Bhandari, who was called to the hospital amidst tight security, is yet to give a statement.
