Mangalore, October 11: On an average, in America the ratio of psychiatrists is100 to 150 per million population where as in India its 2 to 3 Psychiatrists per million are available, said Dr. KS Madhav Rao, Senior Consultant Psychiatrist.
He was delivering the keynote address on the occasion of World Mental Health Day organised by the Department of Psychiatry, KMC Mangalore in association with Government Wenlock Hospital and Manaswini, Mangalore on Monday at the RAPCC Conference Hall of Wenlock Hospital.
Explaining the significance of the mental health, he said human distress, depression, sleeplessness, seeing ghost/Mohini and excess use of alcohols etc. are the symptoms of mental ill health. “One has to identify it in the early stage”, suggested the doctor.
Linking the raising number of suicide cases to the mental ill health, Dr Madhav said, the suicide rate is 3,000 per day in the world and the suicide attempt's rate is 15 to 20 times more than that.
This year World Mental Health Day was observed with the theme “The Great Push: Investing in Mental Health” across the globe as per the decision of 'World Federation of Mental Health'.
Dr. Ravish Thunga, Prof. and HOD Psychiatry KMC, Mangalore welcomed the dignitaries and the gathering.
Dheshpande, Principal District and Sessions Judge, Dhakshina Kannada inaugurating the programme, said that in modern days people always require help of psychiatrists as we are leading a mechanism life that create disappointments and distress.
“However, as of now, psychiatrists are not getting the deserved respect”, he regretted.
He said that in every schools and colleges mental Health Club has to be established for proper guidance.
Dr MV Prabhu released pamphlets prepared to create awareness about mental health.
On the same occasion prizes were distributed for the winners of poster making competition psychiatry quiz organised as part of the Day.
