Kota, October 13: Noted environmentalist Salumarada Thimakka was on Wednesday conferred with prestigious 'Dr Shivaram Karanth Huttura award' for her service.

The programme was organised by Kotathattu Gram Panchayat at Sri Shambhavi Vidyadayini School, Giliyaru near here.

Conferring the award, Minister for Rural Development Jagdish Shettar said that the award is first of its kind that is given away by a Gram Panchayath across the state.

Administrative decentralisation proves to be significant only when the bodies of the three tier local governance are strengthened. Zilla Panchayat, Taluk Panchayat and Gram Panchayat should be given additional powers. The recommendations made by the III Finance Commission should be implemented. The fund allocations for Gram Panchayat should be based on the population. However, the financial support by the government for both Taluk Panchayat and Zilla Panchayat is hiked to Rs one crore. The sanctioned fund should be utilised effectively, he added.

He also said there is a need to study the ideologies of late litterateur Jnanpith awardee Dr Shivram Karanth with a broader approach. His works inspired by his multi-faceted personality need to be studied in depth.

Speaking after inaugurating Karanth Kalabhavan, Higher Education Minister Dr V S Acharya said the Karanth Kalabhavan is constructed at the cost of Rs 2 crore.

He said Udupi district administration will be directed to take up recreational activities at the Kalabhavan. A full-fledged library will be opened besides an Anganavadi.

Awareness programmes on various issues will be held. The Karantha Kalagrama at Manipal will be completed shortly and all necessary art related activities will be introduced for children, he added.

Salumarada Thimakka said that she is really ignorant about the greatness of the legendry litterateur. However, she is aware that he was also an environmentalist who struggled for the cause of environment like her. She said she is happy with the award and the felicitation ceremony. The statue of Dr Shivram Karanth was unveiled by III Finance Commission Implementation Task Force Committee Chairman A G Kodgi.

Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda who could not take part in the programme had sent a recorded speech and said that a hospital at Salumarada Thimmakka's village at Mavudi near Bangalore will be sanctioned at the earliest. She will be given a house by the government and free medical facilities. A sum of Rs 5 lakh will be deposited in her name.

Bengaluru: The Janata Dal (Secular) is grappling with its most tumultuous political crisis yet, with speculation rife about imminent defections among its lawmakers. This storm comes in the aftermath of party scion Nikhil Kumaraswamy's humiliating defeat in the Channapatna bypoll—his third consecutive electoral loss after setbacks in Mandya (2019) and Ramanagara (2023). With the regional party’s Assembly tally shrinking to 18 from 19, questions are being raised about its survival.

The murmurs of rebellion were amplified on Monday when Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao and Congress MLA CP Yogeshwar openly hinted at possible desertions within the JD(S) ranks. Yogeshwar, newly elected from Channapatna, declared he could orchestrate a migration of JD(S) MLAs to Congress. “I’ll meet them at the Belagavi session. Within a month, they’ll be in Congress,” he confidently stated during a televised interview. Yogeshwar has a history of engineering defections, having played a pivotal role in the collapse of the JD(S)-Congress coalition government in 2019 during his stint with the BJP.

Dinesh Gundu Rao, not mincing words, slammed the JD(S) leadership for fostering "self-serving politics," criticizing the HD Deve Gowda family for failing to nurture party talent. “There’s no trust. Their MLAs will seek survival—either in BJP or Congress,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, the expelled JD(S) state president CM Ibrahim added fuel to the fire by claiming that 12-13 MLAs are "disillusioned" with the current leadership. Speculations around senior JD(S) leader GT Deve Gowda joining Congress have also intensified. DK Shivakumar, Karnataka’s Deputy CM and Congress president, described GT Deve Gowda as a “valuable leader” who might be frustrated with the party’s internal dynamics.

While Congress leaders seem eager to poach JD(S) legislators, the BJP is not far behind in targeting the floundering party. The situation signals a decisive moment for the JD(S), as its survival now hinges on how it manages this brewing storm of discontent.

Bengaluru: The Prime Minister Narendra Modi led union government has requested the Karnataka High Court to direct the Mandya district administration and the state government to clear a madrasa operating within the premises of the historic Jama Masjid in Srirangapatna.

The Waqf Board, opposing this move, has claimed the mosque as its property and defended the right to conduct madrasa activities there.

The matter was brought before a division bench headed by Chief Justice N V Anjaria following a public interest litigation filed by a person named Abhishek Gowda from Kabbalu village in Kanakapura taluk. The petition alleged “unauthorised madrasa activities” within the mosque.

Representing the Central government, Additional Solicitor General of India for High Court of Karnataka, K Arvind Kamath argued that the Jama Masjid was designated as a protected monument in 1951, yet unauthorised madrasa operations continue there.

He noted that concerns over potential law and order issues have so far prevented any intervention. Kamath urged the court to direct the Mandya district administration to take action and vacate the madrasa from the mosque.

In defence, lawyers for the state government and the Waqf Board contested this request, stating that the Waqf Board had been recognised as the owner of the property since 1963 and, thus, conducting madrasa activities there is lawful.

After hearing both sides, the bench adjourned the case for further arguments, scheduling the next hearing for November 20.

Bengaluru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Thursday backed Chief Minister Siddaramaiah over his claim that the BJP had offered Rs 50 crore each to 50 Congress MLAs in an attempt to "topple" the state government.

Addressing reporters here, Shivakumar, also the Congress state president, said, “The BJP indeed lured 50 Congress MLAs with Rs 50 crore each.”

He defended Siddaramaiah’s statement and said the Congress MLAs were briefed about the BJP’s alleged 'Operation Lotus', a term used to describe the BJP's attempts to destabilise ruling governments through horse-trading.

“Some of our MLAs informed the Chief Minister about this matter, and he, in turn, shared it with the media,” Shivakumar said.

At an event in Mysuru, Siddaramaiah reiterated the claim that "none of the Congress MLAs had accepted the offer".

He also accused the BJP of filing false cases against him in a bid to "remove him and overthrow his government".

The BJP has yet to respond to the allegations.
