Kanhangad, October 13: In protest against the arrest of some youths including students following the Kanhangad disturbances about 200 women blocked the police vehicles in Kolayaval on Thursday morning.
The women protestors threatened the police that they would not allow anyone to pass unless they took action against the cops who chased a 14 year boy who later jumped in to a river to save himself from the police.
The agitating women condemned the police raid on several houses in the area. They accused the police of arresting youths not involved in the violence.
The police officials held talks with the protesting women and the siege was withdrawn following assurance that the police would let off those found not involved in the incident.
Kalyanai, 60, a woman who blocked the police vehicles said the police had let off the IUML activists who had set on fire a police jeep. This was done following direction by the police higher ups, she said. “But, instead of arresting the aggressors the police were arresting the innocent boys at the direction given by Muslim League leaders”, she added.
Though the town had returned to peace on Wednesday, fresh violence broke out in Kolavayalal and Chithari where some houses were attacked by the rioting mob.
The mob stoned the police who fired rubber bullets on them injuring a police officer on Wednesday night.
Meanwhile, protest is continuing against the police for their alleged bias in dealing with the situation.
