Udupi, October 14: The Karnataka State Junior and Senior Athletic Championship-2011, to be held from Oct 13-16, was inaugurated at Mahathma Gandhi Stadium, Ajjarkad, Udupi on Thursday evening.
Former athlete Ashwini Nachappa inaugurated the championship by handing over the lit torch to the athlete. In her inaugural address Nachappa said that at the athletic championship held at Mysore last year had registered 21 new records and hoped that Udupi championship would create more new records.
She expressed concern over political interference in the sports and games field. ``Either Suresh Kalmadi or VK Malhothra, who had been in the forefront of national sports and games, were only concerned about political mileage and never committed to development of sports and games in the country''.
Chief guest and district incharge minister Dr VS Acharya said that the government has sanctioned Rs 4 crore for laying synthetic track in the Mahathma Gandhi stadium, Ajjarkad and the works will be completed soon.
President of the Athletic championship committee and MLA K Raghupathi Bhat, Secretary of Karnataka Athletic Association Sathyanarayana, CMC President Kiran Kumar, Deputy Commissioner MT Reju and others were present. 2,500 athletes from 23 teams from across the state are participating in the championship. The championship will have 240 events in four categories.
