Mangalore, October 18: Police have detained three persons in connection with the tragedy at the Phase III construction site of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd, which claimed the life of a worker and injured four others on Tuesday.
Chief engineer of Engineering India Ltd, which oversees the on-going works at the site, RCM officer of the infrastructure company, which has taken the contract of the work and the site supervisor have been taken into custody for questioning, sources from Suratkal police station said.
The police action comes following a complaint filed by Gangadhar, one of the injured in the blast. The complainant has alleged that the lack of safety measures and the negligence on part of the above officers were main causes for the tragedy.
“The blast occurred because they forced the labourers to carry out gas filling, gas cutting and painting works simultaneously inside the huge oil storage tank” said Gangadhar, who was engaged in painting works during the blast.
Gangadhar has sustained injuries on his head and waist after falling from the tank during the incident.
