In an official felicitation ceremony, organised by the civic body more than three months after the special children returned home victorious, Mayor Praveen Anchan handed over the cheques to the achievers at his chamber in presence of MCC Commissioner K Harish Kumar and other dignitaries.
Three of the four athletes - Anil Mendonca, and Royston Pinto, of St Agnes Special School, and Dhanya S Rao of Chethana Balavikasa Kendra were present.
Prameela Pinto, of Manasa Rehabilitation and Training Centre, Pamboor, Udupi could not make it to the event.
While Royston had won the 1,000 M speed skating race in the higher ability category of the Special Olympics, Dhanya bagged two gold medals - one in the 30 M Slalom Race where she had to make snake-like movement between five equidistant cones and 30 M Straight Line Race, in the lower ability category. Prameela, who participated in the lower ability category but in the higher age group, bagged gold in 30 M Straight Line and bronze in 30 M Slalom Race. Anil Mendonca bagged a bronze medal in volleyball.
