Mangalore, October 22: Protesting against the erratic power supply, the members of District Congress Committee took out a torchlight rally in front of Mangalore City Corporation building, Lalbagh on Friday night.

The rally was inaugurated by Ivan D' Souza, KPCC general secretary who lighted the torch and handed it over to MLA U T Khader.

Speaking on the occasion Mr Khader said the BJP led State government has spent billions of rupees to purchase electricity from outside the states. If the same amount spent to generate the electricity, state could have produced sufficient electricity today, he said.

He expressed suspicion over BJP government's intention behind purchasing the electricity instead of producing it in the state.

Mr D'Souza said that the BJP had promised 24-hour power supply in its manifesto. The State Government had also said that there would be no load-shedding when students were facing examinations. But the situation was exactly the opposite. The frequent load-shedding had also affected drinking water supply in rural areas. The Government had not taken any steps to increase power generation.

The procession passed through the main roads of the city.

Kodijal Ibrahim, Arun Coelho, T K Sudhir, Mithun Rai, Lancelot Pinto, Shashidhar Hegde, Deepak Poojary, Gulzar Banu, Nagendra Kumar and others were among those present.
